We welcome the lifting of the two-child benefit limit as a step towards eradicating child poverty in the UK.
Rosie, our Advocacy Lead (pictured right), explains:
It was an honour to represent Greenwich Foodbank and Trussell on Monday [13th April 2026] at No. 11 Downing Street, for a reception hosted by Rt Hon Rachel Reeves to mark the scrapping of the two-child limit.
Across our Borough, we speak to families on a daily basis who tell us that this policy shift will mean more money in their pockets. This will give parents more dignity and greater choice in how they support their children, while also reducing their need for emergency food support from a foodbank.
Greenwich Foodbank is proud to have campaigned alongside the Trussell Trust as part of the End Child Poverty Coalition to advocate for the families who are supported by our foodbank.
As one mum at our foodbank said: “We just need people to listen to us. We are not just another number.” (Greenwich Foodbank guest, Woolwich, 2025).
Recognising this significant policy change and its impact is important, as 450,000 children will be lifted out of poverty as a result of it. This will also make a difference in Greenwich, where 39% of all people who accessed Greenwich Foodbank last year were under 16 years old. Lifting the two-child limit will ensure these children receive greater support.
This event was an important step in recognising the impact of the policy change, and we will continue to share real-life stories and advocate for those families who continue to need support from our foodbank, to ensure that this policy progress is protected for future families and that further investment in reducing child poverty is prioritised to support the millions of children living in low-income households across the UK.
We will continue to share real-life stories of the impact of this policy change in Greenwich and work to ensure this progress is protected for future families. We will also continue to advocate for the families who still need support from our foodbank, to ensure further investment in reducing child poverty is prioritised.
