It was a pleasure to attend the launch of the APPG on Ending the Need for Food Banks’ cross-party inquiry into Universal Credit at Hammersmith & Fulham Foodbank this week.
Standing alongside representatives from London food banks, Trussell, members of the inquiry team, and people with lived experience of Universal Credit was a powerful reminder of why foodbanks must look at support beyond food. Bringing together those with professional expertise and lived experience is essential if we are to understand why our current system is failing so many people and how it can be improved.
This inquiry provides an important opportunity for the Government to consider whether the current level of support provided through Universal Credit is adequate and fit for purpose. We welcome this step and hope that a greater understanding of the impact of Universal Credit on the people who rely on it and on the communities supported by food banks will strengthen the case for an independent, evidence-based approach to setting social security levels.
The call for evidence is now open until Monday 7 September, and we are proud to be contributing to this important piece of work.
If you have experience of Universal Credit or are interested in helping shape future policy, we encourage you to add your voice to the inquiry.
